Alex Malouf: Leading communication and EV transformation in the ME

Alex Malouf, the Board Director at PRCA MENA and Executive Director of Corporate Communications at the region’s first electric vehicle brand, is a prominent figure in the communication and PR industry in the Middle East. Apart from serving as a Board Director at PRCA MENA, he holds the position of Executive Director of Corporate Communications at the region’s first electric vehicle brand. With two decades of experience in the Middle East, Alex has resided in various countries across the region, including Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, and the United Arab Emirates. In this exclusive interview with Adgully Middle East, Alex Malouf offers insights into his journey, transitioning from a journalist to his current roles. He shares his passions and deep-rooted appreciation for the communications and PR industry. Furthermore, he delves into the Electric Vehicle sector of the Middle East and expresses his enthusiasm for this evolving industry. Excerpts from the interview:Could you share your professional journey and some of your notable achievements with our readers?I’ve been an analyst, a journalist, and I’ve worked in a number of communication agencies (some local, some global), and I then moved client-side. I’ve had the good fortune of working with some incredible people, teams, brands and organisations. I’ve also lived through some remarkable changes, such as the introduction of social media, the growth of influencers, and the rise of key issues such as sustainability. What I'm most proud of is helping organisations better understand and benefit from the potential of communications. I have also been dedicated to advocating for important societal issues, including the environment, gender equality, education, and learning. You've earned various recognitions, such as being named the first communications innovator in the MEA region by the Holmes Report and identified as a Rising Star and potential future Chief Communications & Marketing Officer by Provoke Media. How have you managed and successfully played all these roles in your career?I’ve always taken everything one step at a time, be it in terms of my learnings and education, my career path or my volunteering. I’m guided by a belief that communications can be a force for good when done well and ethically, and that we need to encourage more young talent to enter the industry. If you do good work, the accolades will follow. As a communications leader for the first Saudi Arabian vehicle brand, what can you tell us about your experience working with a new industry?Communication is always exhilarating, regardless of the industry. What's truly thrilling is being part of the initial stages of a once-in-a-lifetime transformation of society. There's a multitude of tasks at hand, including engaging with diverse audiences to generate enthusiasm for electric vehicles, demonstrating how smart mobility can enhance transportation safety, and discussing the pivotal role of technology in concepts like autonomous driving. Sustainability and eco-friendly transportation are also essential aspects to consider. Given the wealth of activities in this realm, we must carefully tailor our messages for various groups. How have you witnessed the evolution of the Public Relations industry over the years, and what positive changes have you observed?I’ve worked in the profession in the region for two decades, and it’s been great to see the maturing of the sector. When I started here, the focus was primarily on media relations. Now, there’s much more thought about a wider variety of stakeholders, including employees, community relations, government affairs and the like. We are also tackling bigger issues, such as sustainability and purpose. We still have much more to do to ensure that communications has a seat at the leadership table in every organisation, but we are getting there.Could you share some recent marketing and communications strategies that you have implemented? What changes can we anticipate in the vehicle industry as a result? With the rise of electric vehicles, we are witnessing the biggest change we have seen in the automotive sector for decades. What we have to do is get consumers excited about these changes, and make them want to be part of this change. There are challenges, such as the higher initial cost of EVs, a lack of charging infrastructure, the lost cost of petrol in the Gulf and the need for incentives and subsidies. I’m a convert, and I love my EV. I want others to feel the same, and that’s why communications is essential to making a convincing case for people to shift to EVs.What is your vision for the future of the vehicle industry in the Middle East?I want to see safer, smarter, more sustainable mobility across the Gulf. I think we can lead the transition to an electric future. Communications will play a major role in making the case for this change, and I’m excited about what we can do to get the region’s public excited about what EVs will mean for them, our cities and countries.

Dubizzle Group sees accelerating momentum for electric and hybrid vehicles

Dubai, UAE: Dubizzle Group, the Middle East technology unicorn and #1 regional classifieds platform, says that there has been a significant uptick in the listing and sales of electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid cars in the UAE. Proprietary market data compiled by the Group’s classifieds platform shows a sustained increase in the inventory of second-hand low emission vehicles, signalling a clear shift in consumer preferences towards more sustainable transport options, as well as a maturing of the electric and hybrid vehicle category in the UAE.During the first nine months of 2023, dubizzle’s automotive classifieds data shows a 28% increase in EV listings, compared to the first nine months of 2022. Over the same period, hybrid car listings surged by 142%, further underlining the growing popularity of low emission vehicles. By contrast, non-EV car listings went up by just 9% over the same period.Within the EV category, listings for the Tesla Model 3 increased by 9.2% in the first nine months of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022. Tesla appears to be the preferred brand among buyers, with the Volkswagen ID.4 and ID.6 close behind. Listings for the Volkswagen ID.6 increased by 97% during the same period but declined by 73% from a peak in Q4 2023, likely due to measures taken by the UAE in March of this year to regulate the import of EVs through non-approved dealerships and traders. The strong growth in demand for low emission vehicles, according to Dubizzle Group, can be directly correlated to rises in fuel prices, with spikes in demand for low-emission vehicles closely linked to spikes in fuel costs. Moreover, accessibility of EV ownership in the UAE has improved, with prices for low-emission vehicles decreasing since early 2022, making them more affordable for drivers. Used EV prices have also decreased since the mid-2022 supply shortage has corrected.Dubizzle Group believes that the widely available EV charging infrastructure in the UAE has supported stronger demand. The number of EV charging stations in Dubai has seen a more than threefold increase since 2015, with more residential and commercial property developers introducing EV charging stations to their properties. With Dubai targeting a 170% increase in EV charging stations by 2025, ownership of EVs is likely to continue to rise.Haider Ali Khan, CEO of Dubizzle Group MENA, commented: “As the second-hand automotive sales market leader, we are in a unique position to understand changing consumer preferences, and we can clearly see a shift in trends for electric vehicles. With the availability and affordability of electric vehicles improving across the segment, we can expect to see further escalation in the adoption of electric vehicles in the months and years to come, helping the UAE stay on track for its commendable sustainability goals. At dubizzle, we are deeply committed to helping the UAE achieve these milestones and offering our users the best, most holistic experience while buying or selling their vehicles online.”The UAE's EV market is poised for continued growth, with a projected CAGR of 28.5% from 2023 to 2028, according to BMI Research. The UAE currently ranks 8th globally in terms of readiness for electric vehicles, bolstered by ambitious government initiatives for the transport sector, according to Arthur D. Little research. The accelerated progress of the introduction of EVs to the local market is bolstered by the UAE's commitment to increasing the penetration of low emission vehicles, for example through the National Electric Vehicles Policy announced in July 2023. This policy seeks to create an environment conducive to green mobility by establishing infrastructure standards for EV charging stations and promoting the adoption of electric vehicles. AAT aims to be a significant contributor to the UAE’s National Tourism Strategy 2031 that targets a GDP of $122.6 billion by 2031. The Amsaan Accessible Tours website offers a user-friendly interface and is fully adapted for sign language to serve the 1.5 billion individuals globally, who experience varying degrees of hearing impairment. It serves as a platform to book tours and connect with sign language-fluent AAT staff. Sign language videos in British and International Sign Languages are available on the site, allowing Deaf users to access information easily. Travellers can also initiate direct messages via social media for prompt sign language support, ensuring a seamless experience. The Amsaan Tours mobile app is the ultimate travel companion for Deaf travellers, designed to enhance their journeys and ensure safety and convenience. It offers a range of features that put accessibility and communication at travellers' fingertips, making travel smoother and more enjoyable. These features include access to sign language interpreters via video, ensuring effective communication even during tasks like bargaining with market vendors. The app facilitates easy connection with guides and tour information including itineraries, schedules, and leisure activities, available in sign language and accessible from anywhere. Additionally, the app features an accessibility map, highlighting locations such as restaurants, souvenir shops and more, with sign language interpreter services. Vitalii Potapchuk, Co-founder of Amsaan Project commented: "Accessibility and inclusivity are not mere buzzwords, but the very foundation of Amsaan Accessible Tours. To promote the UAE as one of the top 10 global tourist destinations, we have meticulously designed the Amsaan Tours website and mobile app to ensure that Deaf travellers can plan, book, and savour their journeys without encountering any communication barriers. Our app serves as a reliable companion, enabling travellers to communicate conveniently and securely. We are committed to bridging this gap with our diverse team who is well-versed in eight sign languages and making an inclusive tourism ecosystem for the global Deaf community." Deaf travellers encounter language barriers, limited written communication, and a lack of sign language interpreters at tourist spots. Oversight of the accessible tourism market has resulted in a staggering loss of US$150 billion and 70% of respondents to an Expedia survey said that they would opt for a more inclusive travel choice, even at a higher cost. This highlights the importance of companies like AAT, who has established several partnerships including with the Department of Economy and Tourism Dubai to provide diverse and accessible services for Deaf travellers. Majed Al Bloushi, Relationship Manager at AAT said: "Being an Emirati and a Deaf employee at AAT, I am proud to be part of an organisation that is breaking down barriers and making the UAE a truly inclusive travel destination. Having a two row start gate is a really unique concept and I luckily got out of the gate pretty well in the first two races, which put me in a good spot going into the third. The competition was really tough this weekend, and I’m glad to have come away with the overall win.” Max Anstie, the winner of the SX2 250cc class, said “We have had a great day in Abu Dhabi, and I’m really happy to have come out with a win, especially for the first ever World Supercross Championship event in Abu Dhabi. The atmosphere was electric today in Etihad Arena, thanks to all the fans. We have been blown away by the size of the fan base that our sport already has here, and are excited to see it grow even more.”Closely following in the footsteps of their senior counterparts, the junior category unveiled a new generation of emerging stars from the UAE. 20 young riders, all aged between 7 and 13, showcased remarkable skill and technique in their own race categories, inspiring the next generation of talent in the region at a grassroots level.Saif Rashid Al Noaimi, CEO of Ethara, remarked on the success of the inaugural event, commenting: “We aimed to bring the world's most thrilling supercross action to the heart of Abu Dhabi, and the overwhelming response from fans and the exceptional performances we witnessed have exceeded our expectations. The Triple comprised three jumps that riders had to clear in a single leap, covering a distance of around 70 feet. Looping outside of the Etihad Arena, the outside section saw riders take on two tight rhythm sections with corners that posed high risk for errors, and high entertainment for the audience.SX Global CEO, Adam Bailey, said: “The success of the first ever World Supercross event in Abu Dhabi marks a significant milestone in the Championship's history and demonstrates our commitment at SX Global to delivering top-tier sporting entertainment for our fans. The opening ceremony then concluded with a traditional Ayala performance, before the riders took to the track and battled it out for their chance at a podium spot. The audience was then treated to a nail-biting FM freestyle display, carrying out a series of jumps and stunts that had everyone on the edge of their seats. Abu Dhabi-born rapper Freek closed off the night with a live performance of his hits including “Doos” and “Mush Fathi”. At the end of the month, the riders will head to the home of WSX, Australia, for the Melbourne Grand Prix - the final event of the Championship. The success of the first ever FIM World Supercross Championship Abu Dhabi Grand Prix signifies not only the growing appetite for motorsport in the region, but also showcases the capital’s ability to host world-class sporting spectacles.
