EC adopts Media Freedom Act

The European Commission adopted a European Media Freedom Act, a novel set of rules to protect media pluralism and independence in the EU. The proposed Regulation includes, among others, safeguards against political interference in editorial decisions and against surveillance. It puts a focus on the independence and stable funding of public service media as well as on the transparency of media ownership and of the allocation of state advertising. It also sets out measures to protect independence of editors and disclose conflicts of interest. Finally, the Act will address the issue of media concentrations and create a new independent European Board for Media Services, comprised of national media authorities. The Commission also adopted a complementary Recommendation to encourage internal safeguards for editorial independence.Vice-President for Values and Transparency, V?ra Jourová, said: “We have seen over the past years various forms of pressure on the media. It is high time to act. We need to establish clear principles: no journalist should be spied on because of their job; no public media should be turned into propaganda channel. This is what we are proposing today for the first time ever: common safeguards to protect media freedom and pluralism in the EU”.Thierry Breton, Commissioner for the Internal Market, added: “The EU is the world's largest democratic single market. Media companies play a vital role but are confronted with falling revenues, threats to media freedom and pluralism, the emergence of very large online platforms, and a patchwork of different national rules. The European Media Freedom Act provides common safeguards at EU level to guarantee a plurality of voices and that our media are able to operate without any interference, be it private or public. A new European watchdog will promote the effective application of these new media freedom rules and screen media concentrations so they do not hamper plurality.”No political interference, no spying, stable fundingThe European Media Freedom Act will ensure that media – public and private – can operate more easily across borders in the EU internal market, without undue pressure and taking into account the digital transformation of the media space. Protection of editorial independence – the Regulation will require Member States to respect the effective editorial freedom of media service providers and improve the protection of journalistic sources. In addition, media service providers will have to ensure transparency of ownership by publicly disclosing such information and take measures with a view to guaranteeing the independence of individual editorial decisions. No use of spyware against media – the Media Freedom Act includes strong safeguards against the use of spyware against media, journalists and their families.Independent public service media –where public service media exist, their funding provided should be adequate and stable, in order to ensure editorial independence. The head and the governing board of public service media will have to be appointed in a transparent, open and non-discriminatory manner. Public service media providers shall provide a plurality of information and opinions, in an impartial manner, in accordance with their public service mission.Media pluralism tests – the Media Freedom Act requires Member States to assess the impact of media market concentrations on media pluralism and editorial independence. It also requires that any legislative, regulatory or administrative measure taken by a Member State that could affect the media is duly justified and proportionate.Transparent state advertising – the Media Freedom Act will establish new requirements for the allocation of state advertising to media, so that it is transparent and non-discriminatory. The Act will also enhance the transparency and objectivity of audience measurement systems, which have an impact on media advertising revenues, in particular online.Protection of media content online – building on the Digital Services Act, the Media Freedom Act includes safeguards against the unjustified removal of media content produced according to professional standards. In cases not involving systemic risks such as disinformation, very large online platforms that intend to take down certain legal media content considered to be contrary to the platform's policies will have to inform the media service providers about the reasons, before such take down takes effect. Any complaints lodged by media service providers will have to be processed with priority by those platforms.New user right to customise your media offer – the Media Freedom Act will introduce a right of customisation of the media offer on devices and interfaces, such as connected TVs, enabling users to change the default settings to reflect their own preferences. The proposal is accompanied by a Recommendation setting out a number of voluntary best practices collected from the sector and geared at promoting editorial independence and greater ownership transparency. The Recommendation provides a toolbox of voluntary measures for media companies to consider, such as the conditions for independent creation of editorial content, through empowering journalists to participate in crucial decisions for the functioning of media outlets, to strategies for ensuring long-term stability of news content production.A European watchdog for media freedom The Commission proposes to set up a new independent European Board for Media Services comprised of national media authorities. The Board will promote the effective and consistent application of the EU media law framework, in particular by assisting the Commission in preparing guidelines on media regulatory matters. It will also be able to issue opinions on national measures and decisions affecting media markets and media market concentrations. The Board will also coordinate national regulatory measures regarding non-EU media that present a risk to public security to ensure that those media do not circumvent the applicable rules in the EU. The Board will also organise a structured dialogue between very large online platforms and the media sector to promote access to diverse media offers and to monitor platforms' compliance with self-regulatory initiatives, such as the EU Code of Practice on Disinformation.Next stepsIt is now for the European Parliament and the Member States to discuss the Commission's proposal for a Regulation under the ordinary legislative procedure. Once adopted, it will be directly applicable across the European Union. The Commission will encourage discussions, notably as part of the European News Media Forum, on voluntary practices by media companies linked to the accompanying Recommendation.BackgroundIndependent media are a public watchdog, a key pillar of democracy, as well as an important and dynamic part of our economy. They are crucial in forming a public sphere, shaping public opinion and holding those in power to account. On a global scale, the European Union remains a stronghold for free and independent media. At the same time, there are increasingly worrying trends across the EU. The Commission has been closely monitoring all those developments through the Rule of Law Report and other tools such as the Media Pluralism Monitor. Challenges identified by the previous Rule of Law reports have led to several EU initiatives, including a recommendation on the safety of journalists and measures to address abusive lawsuits against public participation (SLAPP).The European Media Freedom Act was announced by President von der Leyen in her 2021 State of the Union Address. It builds on the Commission's rule of law reports and the revised Audiovisual Media Services Directive, which provides for EU-wide coordination of national legislation for audiovisual media. The act also builds on the Digital Services Act (DSA) and Digital Markets Act (DMA), as well as the new Code of Practice on Disinformation. It is part of the EU's efforts in promoting democratic participation, addressing disinformation and supporting media freedom and pluralism, as set out under the European Democracy Action Plan. This proposal complements the recently adopted Recommendation on the protection, safety and empowerment of journalists and the Directive to protect journalists and rights defenders from abusive litigation (anti-SLAPP package). The Media Freedom Act also works in tandem with initiatives related to viability, resilience and digital transformation of the media sector adopted under the Media and Audiovisual Action Plan and revised copyright rules. The proposal is based on extensive consultation with stakeholders, including a public consultation.

Piracy sites threaten users with malware attacks

Visitors to piracy sites are bombarded with malicious ads that use scare tactics to trick them into downloading malware, including ransomware that takes over files to force victims to pay to regain access, a joint investigation by the Digital Citizens Alliance, White Bullet, and Unit 221B has found. The investigation also found that these malicious ads, called malvertising, are often enabled by ad intermediary companies that promote scare tactics and other dubious means to trick or entice users to click on dangerous ads. The Unholy Triangle report highlights how piracy operators, malvertisers, and ad intermediaries profit off Internet users lured to suspect sites by the prospect of free content. The starkest example of the cyber threat was a ransomware attack that occurred while visiting a piracy site. Investigators were prompted to click on an ad  – but instead found their files locked up, followed by a demand to make a payment to regain access: “All your files like pictures, databases, documents, and other important [sic]are encrypted with [sic]strongest encryption and unique key….Please note that you will never restore your data without payment.”“Ransomware is the most serious cyber threat that consumers, small businesses, governments, and corporations face,” said Tom Galvin, executive director of the Digital Citizens Alliance. “The revelations that piracy operators, malvertisers, and ad intermediaries are profiting by harming Internet users is a wake-up call that we need a concerted and coordinated response to combat this growing threat.”Previous Digital Citizens Alliance research estimates piracy is a $2 billion-plus ecosystem fueled by illicit access to movies, TV shows, and live entertainment. While investigations have previously shown how piracy is used to infect devices, the Unholy Alliance report is the first to detail the relationship between piracy operators, malvertisers, and certain players in the ad intermediary ecosystem.Digital Citizens, piracy advertising expert White Bullet, and cybersecurity firm Unit 221B undertook a months-long investigation that analyzed thousands of piracy sites, including well-known platforms such as Fmovies[.]to, Myflixer[.]to, and Dramacool9[.]co. The groups then conducted an in-depth analysis of advertising and threats on the most-visited piracy sites or those that had the most malvertising. The investigation, conducted over the last several months, found:Piracy operators generate an estimated at least $121 million in revenues by allowing malvertisers to victimize their users. Beyond ransomware, investigators found malicious ads containing malware that seek access to a user’s device to steal banking information, download spyware to track a user’s activities, or flag the device for a future attack. Malvertising generates enormous revenue for piracy operators. Malvertising accounted for 12 percent of the total ads on piracy sites. More than half of the $121 million generated ($68.3 million) came from U.S. visits to these sites – suggesting that U.S. Internet users are especially at risk.Malvertising is widespread on piracy sites. Nearly 80 percent of pirate sites served up malware-ridden ads to their users. And the volume of malvertising targeting pirate-site users is significant. Visitors to piracy sites faced an estimated 321 million ads designed to harm them.Instead of prohibiting harmful content, some ad intermediaries are willing to facilitate campaigns involving blatantly misleading ads, such as a false claim that the user has a computer virus, or coach illicit actors on effective tactics to frighten or otherwise entice users to click on ads. In one example, investigators approached ad intermediary RichAds to see if it would approve a proposed ad clearly designed to deceive users. RichAds approved it even though the ad falsely warned users that their device had a virus to trick them into downloading “a security tool” that is malware. While not every visit to a piracy site results in malware, the investigation found that -- on average -- 1 in 6 times a visit to a piracy site leads to an attempt to serve malware. As a follow-up to the report, a Digital Citizens survey found that Americans who visit piracy sites are two to three times more likely to report an issue with malware than those who say they haven’t visited these sites.“This report confirms what content owners have suspected for years – that using piracy services is likely to harm consumers through malware infection,” says Peter Szyszko, CEO and founder of White Bullet. “We collect vast amounts of advertising data on piracy services and track its value. Clearly it is not just brands who are to blame for funding piracy through ad placement; ad tech companies need to be vigilant about where they place ads and the type of ads they accept. Piracy services seek to make as much money as possible – whether from legitimate but misplaced ads or from malicious actors. The ad industry needs to stop funding piracy, or, as we can now see, content owners and consumers all suffer.”"The level of deception on pirate movie sites is alarming," said Shaun Gallagher, Chief Technology Officer at Unit 221B. "Threat actors with ties to Russia are using these sites to prey on American consumers. These malware pushers grab every ounce of profit they can with no regard for the damage they cause. A couple innocent clicks could lead to a severe violation of privacy and cost hundreds of dollars, as consumers are bombarded with malicious ads containing ransomware and adware."

The diversification of the advanced audiences portfolio into healthcare, automotive and marketing technology will provide marketers a seamless, unparalleled view of audiences at each step of the media journey once incorporated into Nielsen ONE. Through a recent agreement, Nielsen clients can now utilize Swoop audiences in Nielsen’s planning and measurement products for its custom healthcare segments, making Swoop the first healthcare data provider to integrate its audience segments into Nielsen’s solutions. This allows healthcare and pharmaceutical advertisers to make more informed media planning, over-the-air radio, audio and linear TV buying decisions by understanding the unique behaviors of these audiences. Through Nielsen’s advanced audience suite, healthcare and pharmaceutical advertisers can better reach audiences across the media ecosystem. Based on Nielsen’s strategic relationship with S&P Global Mobility (formerly IHS Markit), Nielsen has integrated Polk Automotive Solutions data across certain Nielsen offerings, allowing media sellers and auto marketers to leverage data across their planning and measurement use cases. Media sellers and auto advertisers can make effective decisions about engaging automotive shoppers and assess if their campaigns are reaching desired audiences.Nielsen has connected its advanced audience capabilities with global advertising and marketing technology company Epsilon, accelerating the ability for Epsilon’s clients to harness the power of their first-party data to enhance, buy and measure campaigns with confidence. With this integration, Epsilon can give brands, agencies and publishers the ability to reach real consumers across all channels with a privacy-first approach.“Today’s advertiser needs access to quick and efficient insights that allow them to more effectively plan across platforms and reach the audiences that matter most,” said Angela Girardin, SVP of Audience Intelligence at Nielsen. “By incorporating a variety of industries into our already robust advanced audience suite, advertisers and agencies will have unprecedented access to audiences that will help them better plan and execute their media dollars.”“Through this strategic relationship with Nielsen, we are able to combine the precision of Swoop’s custom audiences with the scale and power of television,” said Scott Rines, Chief Revenue Officer for Swoop. “Healthcare marketers are now able to leverage Swoop strategic audiences, using the same Swoop audiences they have planned with, across channels and formats. Swoop can now offer a true multi-screen solution spanning the audio, digital, social, streaming and linear universe for optimal reach and frequency, and the most advantageous media mix.”“With the explosion of content across media channels, automotive marketers need the ability to find and reach audiences that deliver vehicle sales,” said Scott Hedges, head of media and retail automotive sales at S&P Global Mobility. “Our strategic alignment with Nielsen integrates automotive data from S&P Global Mobility with Nielsen data allowing users to reach best-in-class Polk Audiences with precision and measure campaign delivery against those audiences.”“At Epsilon, we’re always looking for opportunities to collaborate with industry leaders that share our commitment to fostering a connected ecosystem where data is not only actionable, but respected and protected,” said Gillian MacPherson, Vice President of Products at Epsilon. “Together with Nielsen, we are giving clients the ability to build the type of robust audiences needed to reach people across their screens, create meaningful connections and ultimately drive better outcomes.”Traditional reliance on demographic data only to inform linear television media strategy may not deliver the precision and optimization necessary for today’s marketing climate. Nielsen’s planning and audience measurement products, such as Nielsen Audience Planner and Advanced Audience Posting solutions, enable consistency, efficiency and ease for the creation of advanced audiences and provides advertisers with the same level of confidence for planning data-driven linear deals as they have with traditional age and gender buys.

GACA adopts Artificial Intelligence technology "ICMOR"

The General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) announced the adoption of the Artificial Intelligence security screening technology (ICMOR) for operational use in Saudi airports. This announcement was made on the sidelines of the opening session of the Global Artificial Intelligence Summit in its second edition under the title "Artificial Intelligence for the Good of Humanity" - organized by the Saudi Authority for Data and Artificial Intelligence (SDAIA) and held at the King Abdulaziz International Conference Center in Riyadh. The accreditation came after a partnership contract with Smith Detection Group Ltd - a global leader in the application, management and manufacture of world-class security equipment technologies for aviation, ports, borders, security and the military field - where GACA requested the introduction of artificial intelligence solutions in X-ray baggage screening devices. The technology automates the detection of prohibited items and keeps huge data feeds through machine learning, increasing the capacity and efficiency of inspecting larger amounts of baggage.GACA granted Smith Detection a technical certificate (ICMOR) for operational use in Saudi airports as a result of a successful testing process which recorded a high percentage of detection that passed the approved technical standards, stemming from the joint work and efforts to develop and test the technology. The use of Artificial Intelligence technology (ICMOR) will enhance Saudi airports operations, by accelerating the sorting process of baggage with high efficiency, achieving additional security control, enhancing the capabilities of the civil aviation sector to meet the expected growth of passengers and facilitating the flow of passengers and baggage, and adapting artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques in Saudi aviation. In addition, to encouraging innovation in the field of civil aviation, and facilitating the travel process to enhance the passenger experience, enhance security quality and reduce human interaction. The unique initiative will represent a leading example in the use of new technology in the civil aviation industry in partnership with accredited international organizations, such as the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), Airports Council International (ACI), and the International Air Transport Association (IATA).It is noteworthy that, since the launch of the Saudi Aviation Strategy, GACA has implemented a package of qualitative initiatives in support of achieving the objectives of the strategy, including increasing the number of passengers to reach 330 million and increasing cargo to 4.5 million tons of goods annually by 2030.As a prerequisite for achieving its objectives, the authority has worked to improve the mechanisms of continuous development and innovation through enhancing the capabilities of the civil aviation industry, including through aviation security (AVSEC) as one of the main enabling factors, which has provided a suitable environment for innovation in order to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of procedures to accommodate the growth of air transport.

FIFA World Cup 2022 to fuel demand for short-term rentals in Dubai

The upcoming FIFA world cup Qatar 2022, all set to commence on 20th November 2022, is expected to foster the short-term rental market growth in Dubai. As it’s the first-ever global football event that’s being held in the Arab world, people will be drawn from the Middle East and football fans from across the globe will pour in to witness the speculator games during the one-month-long event.Dubai’s proximity to Qatar and the increased supply of short-term rentals will help it benefit from the 22nd edition of the FIFA world cup, according to Zoom Property Insights.Ata Shobeiry, CEO at Zoom Property, believes that the real effects of the upcoming FIFA world cup will start to show in October.“Many real estate agencies and short-term rentals have reported advanced bookings for November and December. However, the real impact of this upcoming mega football event will be evident in October, a month prior to the event. It will give the already-growing Dubai rental market a major boost”.The expected increase in rental pricesKey performing areas in Dubai have reported a significant increase in rental prices during the first half of the year. Apartments in the affordable category have witnessed an increase of 21 per cent, while the rental cost for luxury flats has gone up to 43 per cent. Similarly, affordable villas and luxury villas have also reported a rental cost increase of 29 per cent and 30 per cent, respectively, according to Zoom Property Insights. These numbers are expected to increase further during the last quarter of the year, due to the FIFA world cup.A switch to short-term stays from 1-year rentalsSince many hotels and resorts in Dubai are already pre-booked, visitors are looking for more affordable options, which has led to an increase in demand for short-term rentals. As a result, many landlords are switching from 1-year rentals to short-term stays in anticipation of increased activity during the upcoming FIFA world cup.Not only this, but the daily rate of rental homes is also witnessing an increase, in response to the rising demand. As per Zoom Property Insights, Dubai’s vacation rentals recorded a rise of around 65 per cent. A further increase is expected during the last quarter of the year.“Apart from the real estate, the benefits of the upcoming FIFA world cup will extend to tourism and hospitality sectors as well. The importance of being Piyush Pandey

“When Piyush pens his thoughts, he is no different from how he is in person – simple, direct, insightful” – Anand Mahindra, Chairman, Mahindra Group. On August 2, 2022, Piyush Pandey, Chairman Global Creative & Executive Chairman India, Ogilvy, completed 40 glorious years with Ogilvy in India. He started his career in account management and spent close to over five years managing brands at Ogilvy Mumbai. But while he was in account management, he sported a double hat and was simultaneously involved in working on lines and translations in Hindi for some of the brands and helped the servicing teams who were struggling to get some quality original Hindi translations. He was encouraged by the then creative director Suresh Mullick who later on asked Piyush to head the Indian languages cell which he then expanded into a full-fledged creative team that included bilingual people fluent in their own language and who came out with original concepts. The approach to language campaign was redefined and every campaign was conceived independently to address the audience of that region. He was then promoted to a larger role and piloted the creative function at the national level.Piyush has been continuously reinventing himself and never allowed the quality of the creative standards come down at any point of time at the agency. Instead, he ensured that the graph only went up, as each year they picked up several local and international awards consistently. He was conferred with the Padma Shri in 2016. Along with his brother, Prasoon Pandey, Piyush was conferred with the Lion of St Mark lifetime achievement award at Cannes Lions 2018. He was named the most influential man in Indian advertising for 10 years in a row by the Economic Times. He was also awarded the Life time achievement award by AAAI in 2010 and was the only person to get the Lifetime Achievement Awardat the CLIO Awards, New York. Awards poured non-stop as this iron man of Indian advertising stood always tall and has been the industry thought leader and brand ambassador not only for India but also for the whole world for over two decades. He has been the man behind several iconic campaigns like Fevicol, Cadbury’s, Asian Paints and Perfetti and was very closely associated with Suresh Mullick for the ‘Mile Sur Mera Tumhara’ film, where he penned the lyrics. In his early days he did some memorable work like ‘Chal Meri Luna’, for Luna mopeds, ‘Lambi race ka ghoda’ for Kinetic Spark and ‘Dil Ki baat’ for Britannia Vital Oil, among many, many others. While awards meant a lot for Piyush to encourage the creative team but he also ensured that every campaign created by Ogilvy is relevant and works for the brand at the market place. His contribution to the industry can never be measured as some of the best talent which came from Ogilvy later on joined other agencies in the industry to lead thecreative of their respective agency. Sonal Dabral, Prasoon Joshi, Bobby Pawar, Rajiv Rao, Abhijit Avasthi, Ajay Gauhlat, Pushpinder Singh, Ramanuj Shastri and Sagar Mahabaleshwarkar, to name a few, worked very closely with Piyush at Ogilvy.Piyush’s intuition and understanding of the client’s challenges is very amazing. He strongly believed in the power of observation which always helped him think deepto cull outthose powerful insights for every campaign. He had this childlike enthusiasm and his deep commitment with great passion that helped him create path breaking work which solved the client’s problem. Over a span of time in his career he has helped and breathe life and soul to many brands through the deep understanding of the roots and culture of India’s hinterland. His campaigns for the Literacy mission and Pulse Polio simply touched the hearts of millions of people across the length and breadth of the country. One of the biggest strengths of Piyush is that he never gets upset or disturbed when a particular script is not approved. He quickly comes back and revisits that script and finds a new and better solution for the client. This has been an amazing quality that he has built over a period of time that has helped him bond stronger relations with the clients and also earned huge respect from them.Lloyd Mathias, Business Strategist and a former senior marketer at PepsiCo, Motorola & HP, (who was a client of Ogilvy while working on Motorola):“I had the privilege of working closely with Piyush Pandey when I was Marketing Head of Motorola in the heydays of the Moto RAZR. Piyush was closely involved with the whole process of reimagining the brand – from a tech-oriented product to one that redefined the mobile phone as a lifestyle statement. He sat in on working sessions, ideated with the creative directors Abhijit Avasthi and Emmanuel Upputuru to bring out campaigns that shook the dominant market leader in the category – Nokia. Piyush was in on every detail and leant his considerable clout within the Ogilvy ecosystem to persuade the Motorola corporate team in Chicago of the advantage of signing on Bollywood star Abhishek Bachchan. What stands out about Piyush Pandey is his deep commitment to the brand, his passion to deliver creative that alters consumer behaviour and his ability to play with the larger team as an equal – many of whom are overawed by his considerable stature.”Prasoon Pandey, Director, Corcoise Films:“When you work with Piyush closely, the first thing that strikes you is that his approach to building relationships is completely different from everything you may know about building relationships. From the first interaction itself, he treats you like his own; gives you room, trust and respect like you were always his close friend. It is almost like he begins each relationship as if it has already been built. That is how he is with not just with directors, but also clients, music directors, editors and office colleagues. And that is precisely what gives everyone, a shot of adrenalin while working with him.The other strikingly unique thing about him is that he always narrates only the soul of his idea and every single time in just one short sentence – precise, deep and incisive. Like he will say, “Yaar, ye idea suno – The big Indian joint family. Celebrated by Fevicol”. He has this uncanny ability to hit the core of an idea in order to reach out to the heart of his audience, after which he would offer his complete trust to you with where you will set the film, how it will open, what you will cut to, etc. That is just craft and he does not allow himself to get distracted by it. Like Arjun, he focuses only on the eye of the bird.I think the most obvious example of this is when we see how his words “Mile sur mera tumhara” touched the entire nation. That was in 1987. In the 32 years since, 32 more films have been made and released on respective Independence Days, all with multiple celebrities singing together at multiple locations and so forth; but none could impact the nation as a whole like “Mile sur”. I guess because Piyush knew that while celebs coming together to sing for something was impressive, it is not the idea. The idea lay in his words “Mile sur mera tumhara, toh sur bane hamara”. The words were deep but simple, just like the man himself.”Govind Pandey CEO TBWA India:“When I joined Ogilvy, Piyush was heading the creative of the Mumbai office. I have very fond memories of Piyush. He was a formative influence in my early years professionally and I tried to pick up a lot from my interactions. Firstly, his philosophy of work and life has been shaped by years of playing cricket and from growing up being part of a large family. He knows how to build a strong team and lead it from the front. Like he used to always say play front foot fearlessly. He knew the emotions of being part of a large family and the dynamics of relating and connecting. He had the knack of bringing that Indianness with strong ideas so effortlessly and with ease which was his biggest plus point that touched the hearts of millions. He is a tough competitor and a fighter who never believes in giving up. He is a natural storyteller with immense self-belief that gave his work an original and a distinctive voice. He even now continues to inspire the current generation to believe that kuch khas hai hum sabhi mein.”Sagar Mahabaleshwarkar,Chief Creative Officer, Contract Advertising India:“If you find the right person who inspires you and gets the best out of you then just hold on to them for the rest of your life.I did just that. I left Ogilvy in 2007. But every time I faced any kind of challenge, I asked one question to myself “Agar is jagah Piyush hota to kya karta?” That’s how he ended up guiding me even after I left Ogilvy. I remembered my first meeting with Piyush in the Bangalore office. I was keen to take a transfer to Mumbai because I wanted to be close to my parents. Sanjay Naik introduced me to him and said, “he is a good boy and would like to come to Mumbai”. Piyush asked me “What do you do?” I said, “I am an opening batsman”. He smiled and I knew… I shifted from Ogilvy Mumbai in 1995/96. I was lucky enough to play cricket with him. No one can hide his basic instinct in sports. I saw his cricketing brain and knew I am dealing with someone very special here."Kuch khaas hai hum sabhi mein" was written by Piyush for Cadburys, which then became an anthem for Ogilvy’s young small-town boys. I was one of them. This anthem gave me confidence and helped me to fly in a world I had just newly become a part of.His basic value system has always been strong with his most important quality being the refined ability to treat people with so much respect that it makes them feel good about themselves. From lift man to visa counter guy at the airport, to colleagues. Very few leaders can do that. These leaders are not made in corporate culture, neither in workshops and nor in client meetings. They are made through the support of his parents, teachers, middle class grounded upbringing and joint family culture. My Journey at Ogilvy was outstanding. It was in-between Vada Pao to Jaipur ki Dal Kachori to French food at Cannes. If you pay attention to great work, everything else will follow, which has held its weight throughout the years. He never believed in numbers and 40, I’m sure, is also just another number to him. One big thing which I have learnt from him is that no matter who you are in your organisation, don’t let it affect your craft. I don’t think I‘ll ever forget that. We didn’t join the organisation to write timesheets and just do administrative tasks. I hope to carry this passion forward along with his habit of writing ‘Om’ on top of every piece he creates.Lastly, I’d like to leave the question he asked us ever so often, “Udana aata hai?”. After some time, I understood what he meant. It means – Is this the best you can do? He knew exactly how much to push to get the best out of us. Piyush, thank you for everything.”Ramanuj Shastry, Co-Founder, Director, Infectious:“When I joined O&M as a trainee writer in November 1994, Piyush was already NCD. I was too junior to work directly with him, but I have certainly seen him work. He is a natural leader – inspiring, just and meritocratic. He is a brilliant creative and a fantastic presenter. Nobody works harder than him. I have never seen him lose it on anyone. He pulls up people in private and praises them in public. He always has his team’s back. He answers the dumbest question of the junior-most client without a hint of derision and with absolute politeness. He wields his power lightly. He never forgets to laugh his booming laugh, no matter how terrible the day is. My learnings from this ‘force of nature’ are too numerous to put down here. I am eternally grateful just to be in the same office with him for the first five years of my advertising career.”
https://adgully.me/post/603/developing-a-marketing-program-is-like-being-an-orchestra-conductor

“Developing a marketing program is like being an orchestra conductor”

Authored by Jim EverhartThe digital revolution has produced a dizzying array of marketing communications choices. These new media can be accessed – and updated – 24x7. They are interactive. And they can include graphics, video and text. All of these things are now taken for granted. One benefit that is often forgotten, however, is that these new media can be connected.Email connects to web pages. Search, the same. And few people, especially in B2B, actually purchase products directly on social media, so you need to go somewhere else to buy.But while it’s one of the most obvious features of the digital landscape, it’s also probably the most ignored.Does that matter? You betcha. It matters big-time. Here’s why:The separate universes, the artificial divisions between social and email and web and search, were created by marketers to harness the efforts of specialized technologists. And to handle the workload and get the job done.Despite the fact that they are almost taken for granted in today’s communications landscape, these divisions are not inherent in the media themselves. Links happened first, enabling the development of the World Wide Web (and social media, search, email and the rest). Not the other way around. As a result, all these media had connections built in. They were made to be connected. Linking has always been part of their DNA. Built in, if you will. But now, the problem is that the different marketing fiefdoms have become so big and so specialized that they have drifted apart. The Twitter department doesn’t talk to PR. The email specialists don’t know what the web developers are doing. And the organic search people don’t communicate with the copywriters. There may be good explanations for all that. Depending on the company, the various functions involved in all these marketing activities could be on different floors of the building. There could be separate reporting structures, with different people in charge. They even could be performed by a collection of best-of-breed vendors, with different addresses, or ZIP codes. They may even be in different countries, speaking different languages.Worse yet, some have set these different media at odds, competing with each other for media dollars. That despite compelling evidence from the Advertising Research Foundation {cited by MediaPost Editor-in-Chief Joe Madese in his column on March 28 and by Bill Harvey in Media Village that “the more media you use, the greater your ROI will be”.The good news in all this is that it’s not enough to simply slam things together with a spoonful of email here and a pinch of organic search there. The clear opportunity for both brands and agencies is to truly integrate the different tactics. I know that’s a very 1990s term. Deliberately so.Integration used to mean that a print ad looked and felt the same as a TV commercial or direct mail piece. And that they worked together to drive a prospect toward a common goal. The opportunity for today’s marketers? To harness the talents of a wide range of personalities, some heavy and serious, others flighty and capricious. Following a careful script, but adding nuances and subtleties. Constantly balancing the drive to create both artistic and financial success, with reputations and large investments riding on the outcome. In all those ways, developing a marketing program is almost like being an orchestra conductor. You have to plan carefully. You have to selecting the right instruments, build a team. And you have to coordinate the efforts of an eclectic group of people. And execute flawlessly.Pick up your Baton!Marketers of the future need to have all their tactics working together. With paid placements promising a video that appears on a landing page and proves the campaign’s most compelling claim. It’s then backed by an anchor piece of content – like a research study or ebook – that qualified prospect would never pass up. And will willingly, even eagerly, supply their contact information to download it. Finally, the process is supported by marketing automation programs that continue to deliver compelling messages that keep your product in front of a prospect. You rarely hear that story these days, because there’s so much fragmentation. Specialized vendors who want to sell you their solution, whether it’s a programmatic ad purchase, an email program, an Instagram plan, or analytics. So, it’s not surprising that people are looking for a silver bullet. The one thing that will work no matter what. Because integration of all these media and tactics, not to mention the people, is hard. Very hard. But it’s what works. Always has. Always will.Jim Everhart, author of ‘Brand Vision: The Clear Line Of Sight Aligning Business Strategy and Marketing Tactics’, is a freelance strategist and writer, working with corporations and agencies to develop marketing communications tactics and campaigns. Worldwide streaming market achieves double-digit growth in Q2 2022

Conviva, the global streaming analytics platform, released today the results of its quarterly State of Streaming Report, which shows continued growth in the global streaming market, including gains of (14%) in the second quarter of 2022 as compared to Q2 2021. Asia and Latin America saw the most growth – 90% and 70%, respectively – while North America, the most mature streaming market in the world, also grew 5% year over year.As the global streaming industry matures, streaming success is getting more complicated. Device fragmentation is growing, and viewers’ quality expectations continue rising in concert with an ad-supported streaming world. Streaming publishers are challenged to deliver a consistent and positive experience. Whether in Africa using an Android phone or in Texas on a Smart TV – viewers expect a quality picture, instant access to content and zero glitches.“The race is on to see which publishers will meet these expectations, including providing the best experience when it’s most important,” said Keith Zubchevich, President and CEO, Conviva. “Those who do will quickly eclipse the competition. Most importantly, those who make it a priority to obtain real-time actionable insights about their customers’ (real-world experiences) will undoubtedly separate the leaders from the pack,” added Zubchevich. Key FindingsBitrates are RisingConviva found bitrate rose globally in Q2 2022 across all screen types and devices, but often at the expense of other quality metrics. For example, Smart TVs saw the largest increase in bitrate of all screen types, up 15.1% year over year. However, to provide this more high-definition experience, Smart TVs saw noticeable increases in video start failures, video start time and buffering. Conversely, PlayStation and Roku were the only big screen devices to both decrease video start times (down 10.7% and 12% respectively) and increase bitrate (up 4.6% and 12.9% respectively).Big Screens – and Roku – Remain on TopRoku continued to hold the top spot among big screen devices (big screens include connected TVs, smart TVs and gaming consoles) , holding nearly steady at 30.5% of viewing time, down less than one percent as compared to Q2 2021 with Amazon Fire TV coming in second with 16% of big screen viewing time. Samsung TV (13.7%), Android TV (7.8%) and LG TV (7.3%) rounded out the top five devices for big screen viewing time. Chromecast, Xbox and PlayStation all saw a decrease in share as compared to the previous year.Android vs iPhone Streaming ShowdownTo date, the iPhone has been the primary device for mobile streaming, especially in North America. In Q2 2022 the gap closed, with iPhone and Android phones capturing nearly identical global market share, 35.8% vs 33.2% respectively. In addition, Android phones outpaced the iPhone by 10% in YoY growth in streaming viewing hours. In Apple’s favor is its quality — as the iPhone currently beats Android phones in every quality category. As streaming publishers expand into newer, less mature streaming markets outside of North America, optimizing the streaming experience for the android mobile device market will be of increasing importance.MethodologyConviva’s State of Streaming series is the largest cross-platform comparison of streaming data measuring ongoing, real-time, sessionized streaming data at Internet-scale.Data analyzed for the Q2 2022 State of Streaming report was primarily collected from Conviva’s unique proprietary sensor technology. Currently embedded in 3.3 billion streaming video applications, it measures more than 500 million unique viewers watching 180 billion streams per year and nearly 2 trillion real-time transactions per day across more than 180 countries. The Internet-scale census-measurement is deployed from a full-stack censor that is not sampled, but validated, cleaned, enriched, standardized and sessionized. Continuous, real-time monitoring sessionizes streaming events, state timelines and meta data into viewer-led sessions. This more accurately reflects viewers’ real-world experiences. The social media data, collected from the Streaming Publishers leaderboard list within Conviva Social Insights, consists of data from 100 accounts, over 7,500 million posts, and over 30 million engagements across Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok and YouTube between Q2 2021 and Q2 2022.Year-over-year comparisons were normalized at the customer level for accurate representations of industry growth.

Streaming services struggle to know their evolving customers: Study

Kaltura, the Video Experience Cloud, today released a new report titled “Go With The Stream”, a global survey of 200 streaming service provider executives. As the streaming market becomes hyper-competitive and consumers have more options than ever before, the report delves into how streaming providers are adapting to fast-changing technology and consumer expectations.Consumers today are faced with a dazzling array of choices in video entertainment. Currently, there are over 5,300 streaming services globally and new players continue to enter the market. In such a competitive environment, user experience is increasingly crucial to business viability and media companies are acutely aware of this. When asked how they rate their service’s quality of experience (QoE) and features from a consumer perspective, most executives said their services are “good” (43%) or “acceptable” (33%). Only 20% of executives believed their service to be as good as global streaming giants like Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon Prime Video. 64% of respondents plan to improve their UX in the next three years, with 32% planning to do so this year. The effectiveness of these investments, however, will depend on enhancing the service provider’s understanding of subscribers’ viewing preferences. The report found that streaming services largely still struggle to know their constantly evolving customers. Only 25% of respondents claimed an excellent understanding of their audience and 47% acknowledged their understanding is limited, resulting in a misalignment in priorities across numerous functionalities. While some gaps are to be expected due to differing priorities, for example only 23% of consumers value free trials yet their clear value as a conversion tool makes them a top priority (58%) for streaming providers, others are more problematic. While 46% and 45% of providers ranked having a watch list and favorites sections respectively as a priority, no consumers did. Conversely, 28% of consumers want ways to find new content fast and no providers viewed that as a priority.“Streaming services are dealing with a monumental challenge — keeping up with constantly evolving consumer preferences and a market that becomes more competitive every day,” said Nuno Sanches, Chief Strategy Officer at Kaltura. “For media companies to be successful in the coming years, investing in the right elements, from the quality of experience to marketing and monetization, will prove to be key.”Other key findings in the report include:• Media companies are not going at it alone: 79% rely on 3rd party technology to power their streaming services.• Multi-revenue models are becoming more prevalent: 28% of streaming services employ hybrid business models to achieve their financial goals, ahead of those who rely only on advertising (23%) or subscription-based platforms (20%).• Distribution is the top priority for investment: In both short and long-term plans distribution is the top priority, followed by engagement with content, monetization and advertising technologies, and marketing.• Streaming services are satisfied overall with their video platforms, yet flexibility remains a problem: 24% of providers are not satisfied with the integration of 3rd party solutions, and 22% are not satisfied with the breadth of features available. The full “Go With The Stream” report can be accessed here.

Gulf countries warn Netflix on content

Netflix has been threatened with legal action by a group of Gulf countries, if it continues to stream content that is a contradiction to Islam. In a programme in the Al Ekhbariya TV, the issue was discussed, playing the blurred clips from the animated show Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous, showing two girls in a relationship. The channel also held an interview with a family and educational adviser according to whom the country was facing a censorship crisis and that offensive content was entering in the homes. According to a statement by the General Commission of Audiovisual media, the content was a violation of the media regulations existing in the Gulf Cooperation. A joint statement was issued by the six member Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the Saudi media regulator.Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates constitute the Gulf Cooperation Council. The regional authorities have issued a statement, mentioning that it would keep an eye out for what Netflix is showing in the upcoming days, and evaluate its commitment to adhering to regulations in the country.Previously this year, the Walt Disney Pixar’s animated feature film Lightyear was banned by the UAE and other Gulf countries, as it showcased characters who were in same-sex relationship. There has been past disagreements with US film distributors over content especially in films, associated with sexual minorities. Though the UAE is considered as relatively a liberal country in the Gulf region, films displaying adult content are edited or cut commonly.Earlier, Saudi Arabia has asked Disney to remove LGBTQ references in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the Marvel superhero film. However, Disney did not obey and the film was not screened there. Saudi officials were also seen seizing rainbow-coloured toys and clothing from shops, as a measure of clampdown on homosexuality.
https://adgully.me/post/580/barb-consults-on-extending-reporting-to-video-sharing-platforms

BARB consults on extending reporting to video-sharing platforms

BARB has reported programme audiences for SVOD services such as Disney+ and Netflix, and service-level viewing of video-sharing platforms like TikTok and YouTube, since November 2021. It is now looking to expand this reporting to encompass all television and television-like content on video-sharing platforms. The aim of the consultation is to establish an industry-wide consensus on what is meant by television-like content. As a starting point, BARB has identified three requirements that align with the principles in the EU Audiovisual Media Services Directive and public statements made by advertisers. These requirements are:Videos and channels should be under the editorial control of a professional media services provider. They should operate to industry-agreed standards for brand safety. They can be classified by genre to help advertisers and agencies know the editorial environment in which their ads appear.BARB has appointed Paul Evans as an independent adviser to lead the consultation. Evans is a former advertiser, most recently as Global Head of Media for Vodafone. The consultation will invite practitioners from across the industry – media agencies, advertisers, broadcasters and video-sharing platforms – to help shape the definition of television-like content. Evans will present findings to BARB’s Strategy Board in the autumn.BARB will use these findings to articulate a definition of television-like content that can underpin its specification for establishing a trusted BARB panel measure of this viewing.Justin Sampson, BARB’s Chief Executive, said:“Innovation carried BARB to a significant milestone last year. Since November 2021, we’ve been delivering daily audience data for SVOD and video-sharing services. This enhances what was already the most comprehensive and granular measurement service for all forms of television on all devices.“Now we are ready to specify the next evolution in our industry’s gold-standard measurement of what people watch.”

Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared reemergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the farthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone. The series is led by showrunners and executive producers J.D. This World Water Week, PepsiCo AMESA recognizes key milestones of its Net Water

In observance of World Water Week, PepsiCo AMESA recognized its key water stewardship milestones in progressing towards the vision of becoming net positive by 2030. Guided by pep+, PepsiCo’s strategic end-to-end transformation for driving long-term sustainability, PepsiCo AMESA highlights its multi-pronged approach to watershed management through water-use efficiency on farms and in manufacturing facilities, water replenishment, watershed health improvement and safe water access for communities. Water Stewardship is of topmost priority to PepsiCo’s Positive Value Chain agenda.PepsiCo AMESA has avoided the use of approximately 5 billion litres of water in 2021 compared to 2020 by changing the way farmers irrigate crops, focusing on at-risk locations and improving water-use efficiency.Since 2021, PepsiCo AMESA estimates that it has improved water efficiency by a historic 50% in company-owned high-water risk sites across the region (excluding Pioneer Foods facilities in Sub Saharan Africa).PepsiCo AMESA further estimates that in 2021, it has replenished 2.5 billion litres of water through community partnership projects in 6 high risk watershed areas through with science-based interventions.PepsiCo Foundation in AMESA has invested more than $8 million in safe water access programs, impacting about 27 million people’s daily lives since 2018. “Collaboration with local stakeholders plays a key role in understanding the water circuit and implementing meaningful climate action in the most effective direction. We continue working hard to use water even more efficiently, replenish it in high-risk areas and bring safe water access to people in need. For the latter half of 2022, we look forward to more partnerships and targeted initiatives and look forward to exploring the potential for even more partnerships at COP27,” said Eugene Willemsen, CEO – Africa, Middle East, and South Asia, PepsiCo. “AMESA as a region is a very diverse and culturally rich sector and this demands the need for local solutions. We have been partnering with key regional and local governments to help them in their ambitions to achieve each country’s sustainability goals while using location-specific specialized solutions. Water disparity may look different for each country, however action towards water conservation must be united by one major focus – elevating the value of water and its equitable use by all in the watershed,” said Manali Desai, Sustainability Lead, AMESA, PepsiCo.
